Adolescent Discovered Dead Following Untrue Allegations of Taking Cremated Remains
One teenage youth was discovered deceased just days following being falsely accused of taking the ashes of a dead baby during a break-in, an inquest has heard.
Heartbreaking Finding
Kai Lloyd's mother and father discovered his remains in his room at his Flintshire residence on 19 November 2021.
False Accusations Start
The inquest heard how his parent got a communication on November 8th, 2021 via social media, from a woman asking if Kai was her offspring. The communication added: "Inform him appreciation for burgling my flat."
In a statement presented to the proceedings, Lisa Lloyd said the woman had been in the media, claiming her baby's ashes had been taken in a break-in - a allegation which was false.
Police Investigation
An official inquiry from authorities later determined the supposed break-in victim had "provided false information" and "evidence shows that the items was never stolen in the first place".
News coverage about the supposed taken ashes attracted social media responses, and although Kai was not named in the posts, his mother said people "understood it was him".
The "social media content were really upsetting", she said.
Emotional Wellbeing Effect
She added that her son had been diagnosed with mild ADHD, and as part of that disorder, other peoples' opinions genuinely were important to him.
"This must have hurt him deeply," she commented, "especially when this was not true".
The teenager was arrested at home, but nothing was found. He was transported to a law enforcement facility and later freed under investigation.
Authorities said they would be in contact, the inquest learned, but had not reached out to the relatives by the moment of his death.
Isolation and Worry
His mother said Kai "withdrew into himself" after the detention and "would keep asking me whether I had received anything from the police", because his condition meant sometimes "a minute could feel like days".
When she talked to him about the alleged incident, she said her child told her he had gone into the house because the resident who resided there had said he could use the toilet anytime he wanted, but denied taking anything.
Online Harassment
In a joint statement between her and her spouse, Mrs Lloyd said her child was being bullied digitally after the allegations.
The proceedings heard that a 19-year-old encouraged Kai to kill himself.
She had no concerns on the evening before he passed away, explaining how she had listened to him "chuckling and joking".
She described him as a "compassionate, affectionate" young man, and said her "family is completely devastated".
He had been "clearly hiding his worries", she stated, noting that he could not stand to have anybody "have negative thoughts of him".
Educational Response
The inquest heard from school staff at Connah's Quay High School.
On November 8th, she "heard some boys discussing that the student had been detained and that was the first I heard".
"He informed me... he'd done nothing wrong," she continued.
After the discussion, the staff member said she rang Kai's family landline and left a message saying she had spoken to the student about the allegations.
The proceedings learned his family said they never got that message.
Formal Conclusion
Lead coroner informed the hearing he would wait for documents regarding what improvements had been made to handling suspects with the condition, before deciding whether he should make a avoidance of future deaths report.
Delivering a narrative finding, he stated: "Approximately 8 November 2021, unsubstantiated allegations were made against Kai Benjamin Lloyd, a 14-year-old child.
"Probably untruths were afterwards embellished and amplified through the medium of online networks.
"During 11 November, he was interviewed by the police and after his questioning he was freed while inquiries proceeded."
The coroner determined: "There is no proof that the acts or failures of any organization led to or added to his passing and although it was the outcome of a self-inflicted act it is impossible to determine his intent."
