Chinese Ice Dancers Under Probe Following Displaying Prop Weapon at Competition

The International Skating Union are conducting an investigation after two Chinese ice dancers were seen holding an object resembling a replica weapon at a grand prix figure skating event.

Broadcast video captured the skaters waiting alongside a large toy in the form of a missile labeled “DF-61” as they awaited the judges' results at the “kiss and cry” zone during the event.

This model is a new Chinese-made ground-launched intercontinental ballistic missile capable of carrying nuclear weapons, that had been unveiled at a military parade recently.

Officials is aware of an unsuitable plush item seems to have been among those thrown on to the ice by audience members after a routine during the competition,” the ISU commented in an emailed statement.

“The soft toy was subsequently held by the athletes who had just performed. We apologizes for this occurrence and will investigate further.”

Ren and Xing finished eighth of 10 pairs during the ice dancing competition, with the victory going to the American pair of the United States.
