Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, including the count of new jobs created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs created to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its release once the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are rising, although gradually. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
