He has maintained his innocence about the allegations

Previous Federal Bureau of Investigation head James the ex-FBI chief has denied the charges to providing misleading information to lawmakers and obstructing a lawmaking procedure.

His attorney entered the plea on his behalf in a US district court in Alexandria, Virginia on mid-week.

The defense lawyer announced he would try to have the proceedings thrown out for several factors including that his client, a detractor of former President Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.

James Comey was indicted shortly after Donald Trump pushed his chief prosecutor to move forward against him.

Court Developments

In court on Wednesday, Comey's lawyer the legal representative told the court they intended to present various motions to dismiss the case before a trial, stating the government's case was vindictive and that a government lawyer was improperly appointed to assume control of the proceedings.

James Comey's legal matter was initially managed by the original attorney, who resigned under pressure from Trump after his examination into an additional opponent - New York Attorney General Letitia James - did not succeed to initiate prosecution.

Legal Setting

The former director came across in good spirits as he came into the legal venue on mid-week, chatting with his lawyers and making jokes. He was accompanied by his partner, Mrs Failor and offspring his daughter, a federal prosecutor who the previous administration terminated.

After listening to the court read his rights and the pair of allegations against him in court on mid-week, James Comey was questioned if he grasped the accusations.

"Absolutely your honour. Thank you very much," he stated to the judge.

Historical Information

Mr Comey was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013 to 2017 and was fired about four months into the former president's first administration as commander-in-chief. At the time, the director was overseeing an probe into Russian election interference and whether there were any connections between Moscow and the presidential campaign.

During his tenure, Mr Comey triggered a negative reaction from the Democratic party when he announced just immediately preceding the 2016 presidential election that he was examining Democratic candidate the candidate's use of a non-governmental email account. Indictments against Hillary Clinton were never brought, resulting in disapproval from the Republican party as well.

Present Charges

Prosecutors allege the former director provided false information to the legislature during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in recent years when he was being examined about both the previous examination as well as the election interference investigation. They say he provided false information to the upper house by claiming he had not permitted an individual at the FBI to leak to media organizations information about the agency probes.

Prosecutors also accuse Mr Comey of "improperly attempting to affect, obstruct and impede" the panel by making false statements to it.

Individual Responses

Through a recording James Comey shared to his social media after he was accused, he declared he was wrongly accused and charged Trump of acting like a "autocrat".

"Our household have known for years that there are consequences to challenging Donald Trump," he said. "We will not live on our kneeling."
"I'm innocent," he stated further. "So let's have a legal proceeding."

The accusations against the former director emerged after Donald Trump shared on digital channels calling for his top legal official, the attorney general, prosecute James Comey and others.
