Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, located using intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of approach shafts down to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey said. "Including them were a great many UK service members deployed over the holidays. This mission, to take out militants who endanger our safety, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces executed what it described as a "major assault" on Daesh sites in Syria, following an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
