Space Traveler Discloses Mental Health Struggle Following ‘Tsunami of Backlash Following Journey

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also carried high-profile passengers.

The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a public message, describing a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the days following the landing.

She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Buried Under Misogyny

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to female health science and operated research during the flight, said everything she had worked for – including her studies and years of training to the personal milestone of her background – was drowned out under the deluge of sexist vitriol.

She is best known for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for survivors of assault.

Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Finding Solid Ground

Now, eight months after reaching space, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose support were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.

She added that even with the backlash, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the flight, such as spotlight on her women's health research and platforms for her activism.

The Historic Journey

The computer-piloted spacecraft lifted off from Texas in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that exceeded the edge of outer space.

The group of women also comprised leaders in various fields.
