British authorities has added eleven more destinations to its public warning list concerning the threats of industrial alcohol contamination from contaminated beverages.

The revised warning features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after evidence showing "an international surge in the frequency of reported cases" of industrial alcohol toxicity.

Just last month, the government had previously placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing register, in response to multiple serious incidents including the fatal loss of 6 visitors in Laos in 2024.

Travelers are being warned that as little as tiny quantities of toxic alcohol can lead to vision loss or death within 12 to 48 hours.

What is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Used?

Methanol is a toxic chemical typically employed in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and thinner. This chemical is not designed for drinking.

Although it is inherently formed during the creation of alcoholic drinks, commercial firms reduce it to low, safe levels for drinking through the refining procedure.

Yet in certain nations, it is surreptitiously added into spirits to save money, and because it is flavorless and smell-free, it is extremely challenging to detect.

Official Advice for Travellers

Authorities official Hamish Falconer said that all travellers should recognize the signs of toxic alcohol toxicity.

"If you're having drinks abroad, choose well-known venues and steer clear of local brews or free shots," the minister said.

"If something seems unusual, like a headache that's far more intense than normal or vision problems – get medical help immediately."

The complete list of nations listed as presenting a danger of toxic alcohol toxicity now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
