Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology This Season.

The Championships court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the option to contest particular calls made by the chair umpire, following the system currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move comes just a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a player can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at The Championships this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been unsure if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
